API 5L Spiral Steel Line Pipe – Engineered for High-Pressure Oil, Gas & Water Transmission

Choosing the wrong line pipe can lead to catastrophic failure, costly downtime, or project delays. As a direct spiral pipe mill with API 5L certification, Cangzhou Spiral Steel Pipes Group helps pipeline contractors and engineers secure reliable, NDT-tested SSAW line pipe in diameters from DN200 to DN3500 (8″ to 140″), with full traceability and fast roll-to-shipment lead times.
Engineered for high-pressure oil, gas, and water transmission lines. From DN200 to DN3500, with 100% NDT inspection.

What is Pipe Line?

Pipe Line (line pipe) is a high-strength steel pipe used for transporting oil, natural gas, and water over long distances, under high pressure. Unlike structural steel pipe and Steel Pipe Piles, line pipe must meet stringent standards for pressure containment, weld integrity, and corrosion resistance.
Cangzhou Spiral Steel Pipe Group manufactures spiral welded line pipe in accordance with API 5L (PSL1 & PSL2) and ISO 3183, with diameters up to 3620mm and wall thickness up to 25.4mm.

Why do experienced buyers specify spiral welded (SSAW) line pipe over seamless or LSAW for large-diameter transmission projects?

Advantage
Why Spiral Steel Pipe?
Higher pressure resistance with weld integrity
The spiral weld seam (angled at 50-75°) only bears partial circumferential stress under high pressure – making it more fatigue-resistant than longitudinal welds. Every pipe undergoes 100% hydrostatic, X-ray, and ultrasonic testing (UT) to exceed API 5L PSL1/PSL2 requirements.
Lower project cost for DN200–DN3500 pipelines
Compared to seamless pipe (limited to smaller diameters) and LSAW (higher steel plate waste), our spiral welding process uses coils with 98-99% material utilization. You get a lighter, cost-effective pipe without compromising pressure ratings (up to X80 grade).
Faster delivery and flexible customization
As a mill, we control rolling, forming, welding, and coating (3PE, FBE, coal tar epoxy) in-house. For urgent projects, we can expedite 6m–18m lengths with beveled or plain ends within 25–30 days.
This line pipe collection covers API 5L Gr B, X42, X52, X60, X65, X70, X80, and Q235/Q345 – available in PSL1 or PSL2. Below you’ll find full chemical/mechanical properties, NDT methods, and coating specs. If you need a custom OD, wall thickness (6–25.4mm), or premium connection, click the “Request a Project Quote” form to receive a drawing-based quotation within 24 hours.

For intermediate grades, the difference between the specified maximum yield strength and the specified minimum yield strength
shall be as given in the table for the next higher grade, and the difference between the specified minimum tensile strength and
 the
specified minimum yield strength shall be as given in the table for the next higher grade. For intermediate grades, the tensile
 strength
shall be u 760 MPa (110 200 psi).
b
This limit applies for pipe with D > 323,9 mm (12.750 in).
c
For intermediate grades, the specified minimum tensile strength for the weld seam shall be the same value as was determined fo
the pipe body using footnote a).
d
For pipe with D < 219,1 mm (8.625 in), the maximum yield strength shall be u 495 MPa (71 800 psi).
e
The specified minimum elongation, Af, on 50 mm or 2 in, expressed in percent and rounded to the nearest percent, shall be as
determined using the following equation:

where
C
is 1 940 for calculations using SI units and 625 000 for calculations using USC units;
Axc is the applicable tensile test piece cross-sectional area, expressed in square millimetres (square inches), as follows:
       —  for circular cross-section test pieces, 130 mm 2 (0.20 in 2) for 12,5 mm (0.500 in) and 8,9 mm (0.350 in) diameter test pieces; and 65 mm2 (0.10 in2) for 6,4 mm (0.250 in) diameter test pieces;
       —  for full-section test pieces, the lesser of a) 485 mm 2(0.75 in2) and b) the cross-sectional area of the test piece, derived using the specified outside diameter and the specified wall thickness of the pipe, rounded to the nearest 10 mm 2(0.01 in2);
       —  for strip test pieces, the lesser of a) 485 mm2 (0.75 in2) and b) the cross-sectional area of the test piece, derived using the specified width of the test piece and the specified wall thickness of the pipe, rounded to the nearest 10 mm2 (0.01 in2);

U  is the specified minimum tensile strength, expressed in megapascals (pounds per square inch).
The letter "L" refers to the minimum yield strength (MYS) of the pipe (MPa). For example, L245 indicates that the minimum yield strength of the pipe is 245MPa.
Letter "X": The following two or three digits represent the value of ksi for the minimum yield strength. For example, X42 represents a minimum yield strength of 42 ksi, which is approximately 290 MPa
Suffixes "R", "N", "Q", "M": These letters represent the Delivery Condition of the pipeline:
·R: Hot Rolled Condition
·N: Normalized condition
·Q: Quenched and Tempered
·M: Tempered (Tempered)
SUFFIX "S" DENOTES H2S ENVIRONMENTAL SUITABILITY OF PIPES. For example, L245NS indicates that the pipeline has certain resistance to sulfide stress cracking (SSC) in hydrogen sulfide environment.
SUFFIX "BR" DENOTES BENDABILITY OF PIPE. For example, L245BR indicates that the pipe has good bending properties.

FAQ

Q1: What is the difference between line pipe and structural pipe?
A: Line pipe is designed for high-pressure fluid transmission and must meet API 5L standards including hydrostatic testing. Structural pipe (ASTM A500/A53) is for load-bearing construction and is not pressure-rated.
Q2: What is API 5L PSL1 vs PSL2?

A: PSL2 has stricter chemical and mechanical requirements, plus mandatory non-destructive testing (NDT) – required for high-pressure oil & gas pipelines.
Q3: Can you supply large diameter line pipe for subsea pipelines?

A: Yes – up to DN3500 (140″) with 3PE coating suitable for offshore environments.
Q4: What is your export experience?

A: 10+ years exporting to Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa, and South America – with complete shipping documents and third-party inspection support.
